The background for the Queens
Gobelins. "A number of Danish companies, private funds and trade organizations have as an expression for and an appreciation of their gratitude for Queen Margrethes efforts wanted to celebrate the Queens 50th birthday the 16th of April 1990 by presenting Her Majesty with a cash present, which the Queen has deceided to use for making a number of big tapestries, which will be hung in The Banqueting Hall at Christiansborg Palace. The tapestries will be carried out according to drawings made by professor Bjørn Nørgaard." (From the preface to Queen Margrethe IIs Tapestries, the Committee concerning the 16th April 1990, Peter Michael Hornung)." It was decided that 11 big tapestries and 6 small middle pieces should be made, in all about 300m2 of tapestry. 12.5 mill. dkr were collected for the task, but it hardly covers the actual expenses as a tapestry weaver can only weave about 1m2 per year, and the complete task has been estimated to 300 working-years.The French State must indirectly have contributed. The tapestries are expected to be finished in 1999 and will be placed on view at Musée du Luxembourg in Paris in the autumn, and also in Kassel on their way to Denmark. The tapestries will be hung in The Banqueting Hall at Christiansborg Palace, when the Queen turns 60 on the 16th April 2000." |
